Scene 1 Set the scene… Opening organ music... Our continuing story is set in the little town of Black Ridge in the 1950’s . The announcer states in the usual deep and booming voice "And now, another tantalizing installment of Today will be Yesterday Tomorrow…” Organ music fades out… It is Sunday morning. The bright sun is streaming through the seven foot bay window in the kitchen of the Abruzzi family casting familiar shadows on the yellow walls. Yellow and white gingham valances adorn the window. The painted white cabinets lend an antiseptic element to the room. Madge likes order; everything must match. The table is draped with a green and yellow checked table cloth and yellow vinyl placemats define each place setting. The table is set for two. Madge always wakes before Fred on Sunday. She has the coffee brewed and pastries waiting for him. She waits until he gets up to put the eggs and bacon the stove. Fred, a strikingly handsome man with dark hair, gray at the temples finally shuffles into the kitchen dressed in his red striped pajamas and black terry robe. Madge looks up from the Sunday newspaper. “Well, good morning!” “Good morning, Madge.” “Fred, where were you last night? You got in so late, I was worried.” “I had a few things to take care of…pour me some coffee, will ya Hon?” Madge reaches for the coffee pot and fills Fred’s cup. He drinks his coffee black, no sugar. As Fred takes a bite of his pastry, he says “Don’t worry, Madge. It’s business.” “I know, Fred, but when you got the call and rushed out the door like that, well….” “Madge…” Fred said with his blue eyes glaring at his wife. His icy stare penetrates Madge’s soul; it is a look she knows all too well. It is a warning not to pursue the issue. “I’m sorry, dear. I will try not to mention it again.” She says, bowing her head toward her breakfast. Meanwhile..... (to be continued)
