| Going Down With The Ship |

This adventure began with thoughts of going to sea as a crew member on a tanker. The tanker was named the Dynafuel and was a ship of the fleet for the Sun Oil Company. The Dynafuel regularly docked and pumped off gasoline products at the Sun Oil dock in Jacksonville, Florida. Since my Dad was the superintendent there, he asked the captain if I could come aboard. So at eight years of age, I was allowed to wander around this ship (for several years), and ate and drank a lot of free food and pop. After college, I worked next door to Sun Oil at the Standard Oil Plant and also unloaded tankers there. Subsequently, my Dad mentioned an opening on the Dynafuel for a seaman, messman, and wiper position. This sounded like a great adventure, so I took the Coast Guard exam. Suddenly, after passing the exam and signing the papers, the young officer in charge told me that I had to sign my full middle name. However, he began to scold me for not knowing that this was mandatory for all government signatures. His condescending attitude, and especially being loud enough for all to hear, brought my already terrible temper to the boiling point. Since the joker was about my same age, I was greatly offended--so I yelled a few choice words at him. We are talking a sailors' string of their best four-letter words, plus a few combinations. He retorted, so I drew back to knock him on his big-mouthed butt--and was exceptionally happy to do it. Several people around us suddenly grabbed us both, which made me madder, because I never even got in one punch. Hell....he deserved it! Finally, I just picked up my license and walked out. I prepared to become a seagoing rascal and was expecting many exciting adventures in many ports. I already knew most of the crew, who were already happy that I had additional petroleum knowledge and expertise at Standard Oil. About that time, my buddy introduced me to a very sexy brunette. She now became my newest adventure, and my motivation for sailing the seven seas soon became an afterthought. Thus, I canceled my saltwater career, and married the girl with the Big Boobs. Soon thereafter, the Dynafuel was rammed by a freighter off of Buzzards Bay, Massachusetts, and went down. However, the whole crew was saved. Many years later, while trying to locate additional information concerning this sinking, I received an email from the daughter of the captain of the Dynafuel. She gave me additional information, including photos of the two ships at the scene of the collision. After posting this information on the Internet, I've now received another email from one of the crew members who was on board the ship at the time of the collision. His photos and journal of the tragedy would soon follow. Thus, this ongoing saga continues as a part of our family history. Score: lost one ship--gained four kids. And the adventures keep unfolding. C'est la vie!
