Being back for a second time really felt like a homecoming. After getting lost all over Europe with the girls prior to our arrival in Florence, it was great to be in a familiar place where I knew my way around and could get by with some basic phrases. I’ve been to other cities in Italy, but Florence just stands out. It’s hard to explain why you click with a certain place, but for those of you who have your own favorite city or region, I’m sure you understand the feeling.
So, maybe you can also understand the pure excitement I felt after seeing a flyer for the Firenze Gelato Festival that just happened to be going on during the week we were in Florence! The dessert gods were looking out for me.
It was a great festival partly due to how well organized it was. All the vendors were situated under big, white tents that were located in the major piazzas of the city. Here, you could buy your tasting tickets and try gelato samples. Wherever you could find a piazza, you could find gelato. The piazzas were usually packed – with people young and old, locals and tourists alike, but it was worth the small wait to get your hands on a few delicious samples.
The main thing I took away from this festival is that Italians take gelato very seriously!
